MUDAM

The Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean is Luxembourg's main contemporary art venue, in a striking glass-and-stone building by I.M. Pei perched on the ramparts of Fort Thüngen. The collection focuses on contemporary art from the 1980s onwards — strong on conceptual and installation pieces — and the temporary exhibition programme is ambitious.

The light-filled atrium is worth the visit on its own. The Mudam Café has a terrace overlooking the Three Acorns and a daily lunch menu. Closed Tuesdays.

A story
Mudam was the last major project of I.M. Pei, completed in 2006 when the architect was 89. He built it on the foundations of Fort Thüngen, reusing the original 18th-century star-shaped bastion as the ground floor — a literal layering of contemporary glass over Vauban-era stonework.
