The largest open square in the old town, dominated by the equestrian statue of King William II of the Netherlands (also Grand Duke of Luxembourg in his time). The neoclassical City Hall sits on the south side. Locals call the square "Knuedler", from the knotted rope on the belts of the Franciscan monks who once had a monastery here.
The square is the main civic meeting point — markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, the city's main Christmas market in December, and a venue for outdoor concerts in summer. Cafés on the surrounding terraces are pleasant in good weather, if pricey.
