Gëlle Fra

The 'Golden Lady' on her tall granite obelisk in Place de la Constitution is Luxembourg's national war memorial, unveiled in 1923 to commemorate the volunteers who fought with the Allies in the First World War. Designed by Claus Cito, she stretches a wreath over the figures of two fallen Luxembourgish soldiers at the base.

The terrace around the monument is one of the city's best viewpoints, looking south over the Pétrusse valley toward the Adolphe Bridge and the Gare district.

A story
The Nazis tore down the original gilded woman on 21 October 1940 in an attempt to erase Luxembourg's national symbols. The statue was hidden in storage for forty years and only re-erected on its column in 1985. The gilded figure on the column today is mostly the original, restored — though the bronze base figures have been replaced.
