Notre-Dame Cathedral

The cathedral started life in 1613 as a Jesuit college church and only became Luxembourg's cathedral when the country was raised to a bishopric in 1870. The three black spires that dominate the southern edge of the old town are 20th-century additions — the originals burned down in 1985 during restoration work.

Free to enter outside services. The interior is a successful blend of late Gothic with Renaissance flourishes and an unexpected note of Art Deco from the 1930s extension. Watch for the famous Consoler of the Afflicted icon, which has been venerated as Luxembourg's patron since 1666.

A story
The cathedral's crypt holds Grand Duke Jean (d. 2019), Grand Duke Henri's predecessor, alongside members of the House of Nassau-Weilburg going back to the 19th century. The wrought-iron grilles around the choir, with their delicate Renaissance flourishes, were forged by a local smith named Quirin and are considered among the finest in central Europe.
