Beatles Wall Monument

A relief sculpture on a courtyard wall just north of Lenin Avenue, depicting all four Beatles in mid-stride. It was put up in 2009 — the first Beatles monument in Russia — and the courtyard has been informally repurposed by fans, with graffiti lyrics and small offerings left at the foot of the wall.

A short detour from the Yeltsin Center or the Church on Blood, easy to find on Ulitsa Pervomayskaya.

A story
Across the Soviet Union in the 1970s, the Beatles were officially censured but unofficially worshipped; tapes circulated hand to hand and the band became a symbol of forbidden Western life. The monument was erected by a city council that had grown up listening on contraband cassettes.
