In the suburb of Verkhnyaya Pyshma, 15 km north of the city, an extraordinary open-air collection of Soviet military hardware spreads across 30 hectares. Tanks, anti-aircraft systems, fighter jets, cosmonaut capsules, armoured trains — over 500 exhibits in total, all maintained in working order or close to it.
The associated indoor pavilion holds vintage cars and motorcycles. The whole complex is privately funded by the local copper magnate Igor Altushkin and is — surprisingly — one of the largest museums of its kind in the world.
