Sevastyanov House

The most striking pre-revolutionary building in the city: an extravagantly decorated mid-19th century mansion on the embankment of the City Pond, painted bright green with white and red detailing, with cast-iron arabesques, ogee windows and a Russian Revival turret.

The house now functions as a presidential residence — it is used for state ceremonies when senior officials visit Yekaterinburg. The exterior is the point; you'll have to view it from the embankment.

A story
The building is unusual for being painted in an exuberant Moorish-Gothic green and red — the merchant Nikolai Sevastyanov supposedly wanted to gild the dome, but the bishop next door forbade him from outshining the nearby cathedral. The story is probably apocryphal, but Yekaterinburgers tell it with great pleasure.
