The Danube embankment along the Staré Mesto waterfront is a broad riverside promenade that stretches from the SNP bridge east past the National Theatre. It is Bratislava's outdoor living room on summer evenings — families with children, cyclists, and groups of students sharing wine on the stone steps that lead down to the water.
The embankment connects to the Eurovelo 6 cycling route, which runs from the Atlantic to the Black Sea via the Danube. A dedicated cycle path runs along both banks; the south bank through Petržalka is flatter and faster, while the north bank through the old town is more scenic. The journey to Devín along the north bank takes about an hour by bicycle.
Across the water, the socialist-era apartment blocks of Petržalka stretch to the horizon — a striking contrast to the castle on the hill. Petržalka houses around a third of Bratislava's population and is one of the largest prefabricated housing estates in Europe. Walking across the SNP bridge gives a different view of the city and the scale of post-war urban planning.
