Palace of the Royal Hungarian Chamber

The Palace of the Royal Hungarian Chamber on Michalská Street is one of the finest Baroque palaces in the old town — a mid-18th century building that served as the headquarters of the Hungarian treasury during the period when Bratislava was effectively the capital of Hungary. The palace was built for Count Antal Grassalkovich (the same man who built the Presidential Palace) and later acquired by the state as government offices.

The building is not generally open to visitors but the exterior is worth seeing from the street — a classic Central European Baroque palace with a rusticated ground floor, piano nobile above, and an enclosed courtyard. The gateway on Michalská gives a view into the courtyard. The street itself is one of the atmospheric drinking streets of the old town, lined with wine bars and cafes.
