The Franciscan Church on Františkánske námestie is the oldest surviving church in Bratislava, consecrated in 1297 under King Ladislaus IV of Hungary. The original Gothic nave is largely intact, though the interior has been remodelled several times. The adjacent Chapel of St John the Evangelist, added in 1360, retains 14th-century frescoes that are among the oldest intact wall paintings in Slovakia.
The church's role in the coronation ceremonies adds to its historical significance. After kings were crowned at St Martin's Cathedral, they would proceed to the Franciscan Church for the traditional knighting of young nobles — a ceremony that reinforced the connection between royal power and the local aristocracy. The square in front of the church is one of the most pleasant in the old town, ringed by Baroque palaces.
The church interior is accessible during services and at other times by arrangement. The square hosts occasional outdoor events and has good cafe terraces around its perimeter.
