Napoleon's Soldier Statue

Napoleon's Soldier is one of the bronze street sculptures dotted around Bratislava's old town, this one found on Sedlárska Street near the old town core. The life-size figure leans against a bench, one arm extended, apparently asking directions or flirting — the ambiguity is part of the charm.

The statue belongs to the same series as Cumil the sewer worker and the top-hatted figure on Rybárska brána. Together these sculptures give Bratislava's old town a playful quality that distinguishes it from the more formal historic centres of Vienna or Prague. Most visitors encounter them by accident, which is how they're best appreciated.

The neighbouring bench is a popular spot for photos, and the soldier has been posed with countless strangers over the years.

A story
According to the legend attached to the statue, this French soldier came to Bratislava with Napoleon's army in 1809, fell in love with a local woman, and stayed behind when the army retreated. He eventually started producing sparkling wine — setting the foundation for the Slovak sparkling wine industry. The statue commemorates this improbable founding myth.
