Slovak Radio Building

The Slovak Radio Building on Mýtna Street is one of the most distinctive pieces of brutalist architecture in Central Europe. Completed in 1983, the building is an inverted pyramid supported by a central column — essentially an upside-down triangle in concrete and aluminium, tapering to a point at street level and expanding dramatically as it rises. The structural engineering required to make it stand is no less impressive than the design.

The building functions as the headquarters of Radio Slovakia and contains several concert halls with excellent acoustics. The main concert hall is used for orchestral recordings and occasional public concerts. The exterior can be photographed from the street; the interior is accessible only during concerts or open days.

The building is a 15-minute walk north of the old town on Mýtna Street, near Obchodná. It makes a natural stop on a walk between the old town and the Grassalkovich Palace.

A story
The Slovak Radio Building — an inverted pyramid balancing on its apex — was designed in 1967 as a statement about Slovakia's place in the socialist world. It was intended to symbolise the forward momentum of socialism. The building is now universally admired as a curiosity, though the radio station inside still broadcasts.
