Mercado de Colón

A smaller and more delicate sibling of the Mercado Central, built in 1916 in fully developed Valencian Modernista style by Francisco Mora — all wrought-iron arches, polychrome ceramics, and elegant proportions. By the 1980s it was nearly derelict; a long restoration turned it into the upmarket eating-and-drinking destination it is today.

There is no more fresh meat or fish — instead, two floors of cafés, wine bars, gourmet shops, and a much-loved Daniel horchata stand on the lower level. Quieter than the Mercado Central and useful for an afternoon break in the Eixample.
