Calatrava's opera house at the northern end of the City of Arts and Sciences — a 75-metre-tall white shell wrapped in a metallic-finned sail, half spaceship and half breaching whale. Inside are four halls of varying sizes, with the main auditorium seating 1,500 for opera, ballet, and orchestral concerts.
The building has had a rocky technical life — the outer ceramic shell had to be removed in 2013 after pieces started falling off — but the programming under the in-house Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana is consistently good. Worth seeing from the outside even without a ticket; the building looks best from across the reflecting pool at the Assut de l'Or bridge.
