The most impressive of the surviving medieval city gates, built in 1392 by Pere Balaguer in the Gothic style. The towers anchor the northern edge of the old city and frame the bridge over the Turia gardens — they're a frequent backdrop for the official ceremonies of the Fallas festival. The exterior is theatrically defensive, the inner face is plain and open to the city, since attackers who got past the gate weren't supposed to look back.
Climb to the top for views over the Turia gardens and the old town. The neighbouring Torres de Quart, on the western side of the old city, are a smaller and lower-key version of the same idea — and still bear the cannonball scars from Napoleon's troops in 1808.
