Museu de Belles Arts de València

Valencia's main fine arts museum, housed in a 17th-century seminary building across the Turia from the old city. The strong points are the medieval and Renaissance Valencian primitives — saints with gilded haloes against tooled gold backgrounds — and the dedicated rooms of Joaquín Sorolla, the great Valencian painter of light and water.

Free entry, closed Mondays. The garden out the back is a quiet spot for a coffee. Combine with a visit to the adjacent Royal Gardens (Jardines del Real) and the Turia gardens for a half-day on this side of the river.

A story
The museum is one of Spain's best fine arts collections outside Madrid and Barcelona — many of the best Valencian Golden Age paintings ended up here after the disestablishment of the monasteries in the 1830s. Goya is represented; so is Velázquez (a small but lovely self-portrait); and the second floor is given over to Joaquín Sorolla's luminous beach scenes.
