Arsenalna Metro Station

A piece of pure Soviet civil engineering: a single, no-frills underground platform at the foot of a five-minute escalator ride straight down into the hill. The station opened in 1960 as part of the first Kyiv Metro line and is the deepest passenger station in the world.

There is nothing much to see at the bottom — the architecture is utilitarian, unlike the more decorated Khreshchatyk and Universytet stations on the same line. The descent itself is the experience.

A story
At 105.5 metres below ground, Arsenalna is the deepest metro station in the world — a feature dictated less by engineering ambition than by Kyiv's steep right bank, into which the original 1960 Soviet-era line had to be tunnelled. The descent takes about five minutes on the escalator.
