Saint Volodymyr's Cathedral

A yellow-painted neo-Byzantine cathedral on Tarasa Shevchenka Boulevard, built between 1862 and 1882 to mark 900 years of Christianity in Kyivan Rus'. The interior is the main reason to visit: the frescoes were painted by Viktor Vasnetsov and Mikhail Nesterov in the 1890s, in a deliberately Slavic revivalist style that became enormously influential across Russian and Ukrainian ecclesiastical art.

The cathedral served as a working church even through the Soviet period and is one of the few in Kyiv where the frescoes are not reproductions. It remains an active place of worship — keep that in mind if you visit during a service.
