Lach Gates

A reconstructed medieval gateway monument on Maidan Nezalezhnosti, on the spot where the historic Lach Gates — one of three entrances through the city walls of Kyivan Rus — stood from the 11th century until the 17th. The original gates faced westward, toward the Lyakhs (Poles), hence the name.

The 2001 reconstruction includes a small chapel topped by a statue of the Archangel Michael — the patron of Kyiv — and serves more as decorative urban infill than as a historical monument. Useful as a landmark; the real Lach Gates were dismantled centuries ago.
