House with Chimaeras

An exuberant Art Nouveau apartment block built between 1901 and 1903 by the Polish architect Władysław Horodecki, perched on the steep edge above Ivan Franko Square. The walls are encrusted with bas-reliefs of African animals, sea creatures, hunting scenes, and chimaeras — all cast in cement, which Horodecki was promoting as a structural and decorative material.

The building is now an official ceremonial residence of the Ukrainian president and is not normally open to the public. The exterior is the point in any case, and the small square in front gives the best view.

A story
The architect Władysław Horodecki built the house in 1903 as his own residence and a calling card for new business. The cement gargoyles — elephants, rhinos, frogs, mermaids, hunting trophies — were a showcase for the new building material. He bankrupted himself on the project and was forced to sell within a decade.
