The visitor attraction at the Cadbury chocolate factory in Bournville, about 4 miles south of Birmingham city centre, traces the history of Cadbury and the manufacture of chocolate. It is one of the most-visited paid attractions in the UK, drawing around half a million visitors per year, and is particularly popular with families.
The tour covers the history of cocoa and chocolate-making from the Aztecs to the present, the Cadbury family's Quaker background, and the development of the Bournville factory and model village. There is a production demonstration and, inevitably, a significant amount of chocolate involved. The Bournville village itself — the planned workers' community built by George Cadbury in the 1890s — is pleasant to walk around and is a good example of Arts and Crafts urban planning. Easily reached by train from Birmingham New Street to Bournville station (15 minutes).
