Sarehole Mill

Restored Birmingham watermill tied to J. R. R. Tolkien's childhood landscape

Sarehole Mill is a restored watermill in south Birmingham, best known today for its link with J. R. R. Tolkien, who lived nearby as a child. The mill and the surrounding landscape helped shape his memory of rural England, and it is easy to see why: water, brick, trees and old lanes survive here inside the modern city.

The museum side explains milling and local history, but the strongest visit combines the mill with a walk through Moseley Bog and the nearby green spaces. Tolkien fans will enjoy the associations, while others get a compact reminder that Birmingham grew around older villages and working landscapes, not over empty ground.
