An ancient wet woodland and nature reserve in the south Birmingham suburb of Moseley, about 4 miles south of the city centre. The bog is a remnant of the wildwood that once covered much of central England — old oaks, willows, and alders over permanently wet ground — and is notable both for its ecological value and its literary associations.
The reserve is free to enter and is managed by Birmingham City Council. A loop walk of about an hour covers the main features of the bog and the adjacent meadow. In spring the ground flora is impressive; in winter the bare oaks over standing water have a character that is genuinely atmospheric. Easiest to reach from Hall Green station (a few minutes' walk) rather than Moseley village.
