The largest public library in the United Kingdom outside London, opened in 2013. The building, designed by Mecanoo architects, is a striking presence on Centenary Square — its exterior is covered with interlocking gold and silver filigree rings that reference the city's jewellery heritage. A series of outdoor terraces at different levels give open views over Centenary Square and the city.
The library houses the remarkable Shakespeare Memorial Room, a Victorian circular room with carved oak shelving that was moved here from the old central library and is one of the most atmospheric reading rooms in Britain. The archives collection includes the Birmingham and Midland Institute archive and a significant photographic collection. The rooftop garden, free to enter, is one of the better vantage points in the city centre.
