Banff Gondola

The gondola on Sulphur Mountain carries passengers 698 metres (2,292 ft) to the summit at 2,281 metres (7,486 ft) in about eight minutes, with views over the Bow Valley, the town of Banff, and four mountain ranges in every direction. The boardwalk at the top loops along the ridge to the Sanson Peak meteorological station, which was staffed continuously from 1903 to 1931 by Norman Sanson, who climbed this mountain every week to take weather readings — over a thousand ascents in total.

The gondola ride itself ($48 per adult in 2023) is expensive for what it is, but the summit views are genuinely exceptional, especially in clear weather. The Banff Upper Hot Springs, partway up Sulphur Mountain at 1,585 metres, are the better deal: a large outdoor hot spring pool fed by natural thermal water at about 36°C, open year-round. Entry is around $20. Both are about 4 km from town via Mountain Avenue.
