Banff Upper Hot Springs

The highest altitude commercial hot springs in Canada, fed by natural thermal water that emerges from the slopes of Sulphur Mountain at around 47°C and is cooled to a comfortable 36–40°C in the outdoor pool. The bathhouse was built in 1932 in a handsome stone-and-timber style and has been restored to its original look, with changing rooms, suit rentals, and a poolside café. The setting alone is worth the visit: the pool sits at 1,585 metres with Sulphur Mountain rising above and the Bow Valley spread out below.

The hot springs are open year-round, including Christmas and New Year, and are particularly atmospheric in winter when steam rises off the water into cold mountain air. Adult entry is around $20. Located at the top of Mountain Avenue, about 4 km from the town centre — the road passes the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel on the way up. The Banff Gondola is a short walk further up the mountain, making a half-day combining the springs and the summit an easy plan.
