The Great Divide

Continental divide where a creek splits to two oceans

The Continental Divide marks the line where water flows either west to the Pacific or east to the Atlantic. At this roadside stop on the Trans-Canada Highway, you can watch a small creek split in two directions — one branch heading for the Pacific, the other for Hudson Bay and ultimately the Atlantic.

Interpretive panels at the picnic area explain the hydrology. It's also the boundary between Alberta and British Columbia, and between Banff and Yoho national parks. A quick stop, but a satisfying one if you like the idea of standing on a continental watershed.
