Tall pillars of cemented gravel and rock capped by harder stone, sculpted over thousands of years by wind and water erosion. The Banff Hoodoos stand on a bluff above the Bow River about 4 km east of town along Tunnel Mountain Drive. A short interpretive trail leads to a viewpoint overlooking the formations and the river valley beyond.
The Stoney Nakoda people regarded these pillars as giants turned to stone. They are at their most dramatic in the low light of early morning or late afternoon, when the layered sediment glows. The trail is wheelchair-accessible and takes about 15 minutes.
