The pedestrian bridge across the Cumberland River, formerly the Shelby Street Bridge, was rebuilt in 2003 as a 3,150-foot pedestrian-only span. From the centre of the bridge the views back over downtown — the line of the Capitol on the hill, the Batman Building, the Pinnacle and the new Four Seasons tower — are the best you'll find in the city.
The bridge is the natural finish to a downtown walk: cross from Lower Broadway to East Nashville (about ten minutes' walk, twenty if you stop for photos), eat or drink on the east side, and walk back at dusk for the skyline lit up. The bridge was renamed in 2014 for John Seigenthaler, the long-serving editor of The Tennessean and a civil rights champion.
