The African American Civil War Memorial honours the United States Colored Troops who fought for the Union during the Civil War. The plaza is centred on Ed Hamilton's bronze sculpture, The Spirit of Freedom, and is ringed by stainless-steel plaques listing more than 200,000 soldiers and officers. It is a compact but meaningful stop near the U Street corridor.
