The National Museum of the American Indian sits on the National Mall between the Air and Space Museum and the Capitol Building — a curvilinear building clad in Kasota limestone, deliberately distinct from the neoclassical neighbours. Inside, the collections cover more than 12,000 years of Native American history across the Western Hemisphere, with objects from over 1,000 indigenous groups.
Free admission, open daily 10am–5:30pm. The Mitsitam Native Foods Café inside the museum is genuinely excellent — one of the better lunches on the Mall. Metro: L'Enfant Plaza (all lines except Red), exit Maryland Avenue/Smithsonian Museums.
