The Newseum was one of Washington’s most ambitious museums — seven floors dedicated to the history of news, press freedom, and journalism. Exhibits ranged from front pages documenting major world events to a section of the Berlin Wall, to Pulitzer Prize-winning photography. An interactive newsroom let visitors experience what it’s like to report and broadcast the news.
The museum closed permanently in December 2019 after struggling with finances for years. The building at 555 Pennsylvania Avenue has since been repurposed. If you’re interested in press freedom, the First Amendment is still engraved on the building’s facade — one of the largest displays of the amendment in the country.
