The Arts and Industries Building was the first major museum building on the National Mall, opened in 1881 for the Smithsonian's early collections. Most of those collections have moved elsewhere, but the red-brick Victorian building remains one of the Mall's most distinctive pieces of architecture.
It is mainly an exterior stop, best noticed while walking between the Castle, the Hirshhorn, and the Air and Space Museum.
