La Viruta Milonga

Address Armenia 1366, Palermo
Website lavirutamilonga.com

One of the best milongas in Buenos Aires for visitors who want to dance rather than watch — an unofficial institution in the Palermo neighbourhood that draws a mix of porteños and serious tango tourists. The venue occupies an underground hall beneath an Armenian community centre, which gives it a pleasantly unofficial quality.

Tango classes for beginners run from around 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays before the milonga proper starts around midnight and runs until 5am. La Viruta is less strict about dress codes and seating conventions than some of the traditional milongas, which makes it easier for visitors to navigate. The music is a mix of traditional tango, milonga, and vals; DJs are generally good. No reservations needed.
