Mercado de San Telmo

Address Defensa 961, San Telmo

An 1897 iron-and-glass market hall occupying an entire city block in San Telmo, now one of the best food markets in Buenos Aires. The original structure — designed by Juan Antonio Buschiazzo, who also designed the Recoleta Cemetery gates — has been preserved: ornate cast-iron columns, glass roof panels, and tiled floors from the original construction.

The market now mixes food stalls (fresh produce, cheese, cured meats, empanadas, coffee) with antiques dealers, art galleries, and restaurants. It functions both as a working neighbourhood market on weekday mornings and as a tourist destination at weekends. The Saturday and Sunday market spills outside into the surrounding streets. The food stalls inside are a good option for lunch — the churros from the original churrería, which has been in the same corner since the market opened, are worth seeking out.
