Teatro Colón

Argentina's national opera house, and by most accounts one of the finest in the world. The Teatro Colón opened in 1908 after two decades of construction and controversies, a grand Italian-style lyric theatre seating over 2,000, with horseshoe-shaped auditorium, seven tiers of boxes, and a stage large enough for full-scale productions of Wagner.

Guided tours of the interior run daily and are the best way to see the building if you are not attending a performance. The main auditorium, the rehearsal rooms, and the costume workshops are all covered. The Opera season runs from March to December; the ballet company performs year-round. Book ahead — the house sells out regularly, especially for the opening nights of major productions.

A story
The building took 20 years to complete (1889–1908), and the architect who designed it, Francesco Tamburini, died before it was finished. The theatre's acoustics are regularly listed among the finest of any opera house in the world — Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, and Arturo Toscanini all performed here. The main chandelier weighs seven tonnes.
