Once the most violent neighbourhood in the most violent city on earth, Comuna 13 clung to the steep hillside above the city and was cut off from it — reachable only on foot up hundreds of steps. In 2011 the city installed a series of outdoor escalators that shortened the climb to minutes. What followed was a rush of murals, music, and street food.
