Plaza Botero

Outdoor display of 23 monumental bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero

Address Carrera 52, El Centro

A long pedestrian plaza in front of the Museo de Antioquia, filled with twenty-three monumental bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero — voluptuous nudes, a cat, a horse, a Roman soldier, a hand, a head. People sit on them, lean against them, photograph each other on them; the patina shines where everyone has touched. It is genuinely civic art, free, unguarded, owned by the city.

Best in the late afternoon when the light catches the surfaces. Hold onto your phone — pickpockets work the crowd. Combine with the museum on the same square.

A story
All 23 bronzes were donated by Botero himself in 2002, on the condition that they remain accessible to the public in his home city, day and night. He was born a few blocks from this square.
