One of ten bibliotecas-parque (park libraries) built across Medellin in the 2000s as part of a city-led project to plant strong civic architecture in poor neighbourhoods. The San Javier branch, designed by Javier Vera, is a horizontal concrete block with a slatted timber facade overlooking the western edge of the city — books inside, free public space outside. It is in the commune that contains Comuna 13 and is usually visited as part of the same trip.
