Comuna 13 Escalators

Outdoor escalators climbing the Comuna 13 hillside

Six covered outdoor escalators, totalling 384 metres, climbing the steep hillside of Comuna 13. Built in 2011 by the city to replace a 350-step staircase that had been the only way for residents to reach their homes from the bus stop at the bottom. They cut a twenty-five-minute climb to six minutes and have become the single most-photographed civic engineering project in Colombia.

Combined with the murals along the surrounding lanes, the escalators are the spine of any Comuna 13 walking tour.

A story
Inaugurated in 2011 at a cost of US$6.7 million, the six outdoor escalators (384 metres total) replaced a 350-step climb that locals had to make several times a day. They cut the journey from twenty-five minutes to six and are the world's only public outdoor escalator system.
