Medellín Metro

Colombia's only metro system, the spine of city transport

Colombia's only metro, opened in 1995, running on two main elevated lines along the valley floor plus six Metrocable gondola lines climbing the hillsides. Clean, cheap, fast, and a civic point of pride — locals refer to "metro culture" with the seriousness others reserve for national institutions. A single fare gets you onto the whole network including the cable cars.

Riding the entire Line A from Niquía to La Estrella, then transferring at San Antonio to Line B and the cable cars, gives you a complete cross-section of the city in two hours.

A story
Inaugurated in 1995, it is still the only working metro system in Colombia. The city's relationship with it is unusually proud — civic 'metro culture' campaigns enforce a level of cleanliness and order on stations and trains that is striking compared to most South American transit systems.
