Balcón de los Arcaya

The Balcón de los Arcaya is one of only two 18th-century colonial houses in Coro with a wooden upper-floor balcony — the other is the Balcón de Bolívar. The balcony itself, a long covered gallery overhanging the street, is the most photographed piece of domestic architecture in the city. The house belonged to the Arcaya family, prominent in colonial trade with Curaçao.

Inside, the building houses the Museum of Ceramics and Pre-Hispanic Art, with collections of Caquetío indigenous pottery and colonial-era ceramics. The arrangement of rooms — patio at the centre, deep cool rooms around it — is a typical Coro merchant's house, well worth seeing for the architecture alone.
