The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Anne is the oldest surviving cathedral in Venezuela and one of the oldest on the South American mainland. The exterior is austere: thick whitewashed walls, a single squat tower, narrow windows — the building of a small frontier town that expected to be sacked. Inside is darker and cooler than the day outside, with simple vaulted naves and an ornate gilt altarpiece survived from the colonial period.
It stands on the east side of the Plaza Bolívar. The church is still in active use; visiting hours are usually early morning and late afternoon, with the doors closed in the middle of the day.
