Cruz de San Clemente

The Cross of San Clemente is a roughly two-metre wooden cross kept in a tiny chapel beside the church of the same name, a few blocks west of the Plaza Bolívar. The chapel itself is one of the smallest in the city — a single barrel-vaulted room with the cross at the back behind glass.

It is mainly a place of local devotion rather than a major sight, but it is one of the oldest Christian objects in Venezuela and worth ten minutes if you are already walking through that part of the old town. The surrounding Plaza San Clemente has shaded benches and is one of the quietest corners of the centre.

A story
Tradition holds that the cross is hewn from the cardón cactus on which the first Mass in Venezuela was celebrated on 26 July 1527, the day Coro was founded. The cross was preserved by the parish and moved into the small chapel that now stands beside it on the Plaza San Clemente.
