La Vela de Coro

La Vela de Coro is the small port that served as Coro's link to the sea — 11 kilometres northeast of the old town on the Caribbean coast. It is a quiet fishing town today: a long curved malecón, a row of seafood restaurants, fishermen mending nets on the beach, and a few weathered colonial buildings around the church square. The historic harbour is included in the UNESCO inscription that protects Coro itself.

The seafront is the easiest evening trip out of Coro. Local minibuses run regularly during the day; the late-afternoon arrival catches the fishing boats coming in and the sun dropping into the Caribbean. The Flag Monument on the seafront marks the spot of Miranda's 1806 landing.

A story
On 3 August 1806 the Venezuelan revolutionary Francisco de Miranda landed at La Vela and raised the yellow-blue-red flag — the first time the modern Venezuelan tricolour was flown on Venezuelan soil. The invasion failed within days, but the moment is the country's official Flag Day.
