Kolkata's tram network is India's only surviving tram system and one of the oldest still operating anywhere. The routes no longer cover the city as they once did, but a ride still gives you a slow, street-level look at central Kolkata that feels very different from the metro or taxis.
The appeal is partly practical and partly nostalgic: steel cars rolling past markets, colonial facades, and busy crossings at a pace that belongs to another century. Check current routes before setting out, since services change and some lines run only intermittently.
