A 16th-century roadside caravansarai on the old approach into Mashhad from the south, Baba Ghodrat is one of the few well-preserved Safavid travel inns in the region. The square plan, with rooms opening onto a central courtyard, was the universal pattern for caravansarais along the Silk Road and pilgrimage routes; this one is unusually intact.
It now sits surrounded by modern industrial sprawl on the city's southern outskirts, but the inside is quiet and the brickwork repays a look. A short taxi ride from the centre.
