Golden Dome and Minarets

The gold-leafed dome above the tomb chamber of Imam Reza is the visual centrepiece of the entire shrine complex and the symbol most associated with Mashhad. The dome and two attendant minarets are best photographed from the Sahn-e Jomhuri or the courtyard immediately to its north, particularly in the low light of early morning or just before sunset.

The dome is closed to non-Muslim visitors at close range, but is visible from all the outer courtyards and from the visitors' entrance.

A story
The dome was gilded for the first time by the Safavid Shah Tahmasp in the 16th century, then re-gilded by Nader Shah in the 18th using gold plundered from his Delhi campaign. The current gold leaf was reapplied in the 1990s; up close in sunlight the surface is genuinely dazzling.
