Tomb of Nader Shah

The mausoleum of Nader Shah, founder of the Afsharid dynasty and one of the most ferocious military leaders in Persian history, stands in a small public garden a kilometre north of the Imam Reza Shrine. The 1959 monument is a deliberately martial building — a sweeping, sword-like canopy in dark stone over a sarcophagus, with a bronze equestrian statue of Nader in front and bas-reliefs of his battles around the base.

A small museum next to the tomb holds personal effects, weapons, and chain mail attributed to Nader. It's a useful counterweight to the shrine: secular, militaristic, and historically anchored in the same city.

A story
Nader Shah, the last of the great Asian conquerors, sacked Delhi in 1739 and brought home the Peacock Throne and the Koh-i-Noor diamond. He was murdered by his own bodyguards eight years later in a tent near Mashhad, and his body was buried in a simple grave that his successors largely ignored. The present sword-shaped monument went up in 1959.
