Adelaide Fringe

The world's second-largest arts festival, held every March across the whole city

The Adelaide Fringe runs for most of February and March and is the second-largest fringe festival in the world after Edinburgh, with over a thousand shows across hundreds of venues. Unlike Edinburgh, the Adelaide Fringe is free to register for — any performer can put on a show — which means the quality ranges from international stars to genuinely rough work, and finding the gems requires some research.

The Garden of Unearthly Delights in Rundle Park is the main festival hub: a sprawling temporary village of tents, bars, rides, and stages that becomes the social centre of Adelaide for six weeks. The Royal Croquet Club nearby is more upscale. Tickets are cheap by world standards and many shows are pay-what-you-can. If you're in Adelaide in March, this is unavoidable.
